To ensure the best result on your quilt, there are a few things that you will need to do to prepare your quilt top for longarm quilting.
- The quilt top should be pressed, ensuring that all seams are pressed as flat as possible.
- All loose threads should be removed from the front of the quilt top.
- The quilt top should be squared up.
- Identify the head or top of your quilt top with a piece of paper pinned to the fabric.
- Backing should be 4” (10 cm) larger than the quilt top on ALL sides, joined (if required) and the seams pressed flat. If the backing has been joined it is best if the seam used is ½” with the selvages trimmed and the seam pressed flat.
- If your backing has a directional pattern, identify the head or top with a piece of paper pinned to the fabric.
- Batting should be also 4” (10 cm) larger than the quilt top on ALL sides.
- The batting should not be larger than the backing fabric.
- NOTE : If your patchwork quilt top does not lie flat there is a chance that pleating can occur during quilting. I will aim to minimise this but it can happen.
